Swelling and aftercare after a lip procedure

Your own aftercare comes first

You are given aftercare instructions specific to you when you leave the clinic. Those take precedence over anything here. This is background, so you know the shape of it beforehand.

Swelling

Swelling is expected after a procedure in this area. It is part of normal healing, not a sign something has gone wrong.

It is usually most noticeable in the first 24 to 48 hours. Some milder swelling can persist for several days.

Bruising is also common and settles over a similar period.

What helps

A cold compress, used as instructed — not directly on the skin, and not for extended periods.

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated for the first night or two.

Following the specific instructions you were given, which may include avoiding exercise, heat, alcohol and dental work for a period.

Makeup over the treated area waits until you are told it is fine, to avoid irritating skin that is still settling.

Contact the clinic straight away if

Call us on 0491 035 622 without waiting if you notice:

  • Pain that is increasing rather than easing, or pain out of proportion to what you were told to expect
  • Skin that looks white, blanched, dusky, mottled or blue, in the lips or anywhere nearby
  • Swelling that keeps getting worse after the first couple of days instead of settling
  • Spreading redness, heat, or anything that looks like infection
  • Any change to your vision
  • Firm lumps, hardness, or asymmetry that is not settling
  • Anything that worries you, including things not on this list

Do not wait to see if it settles on its own. Some complications need to be dealt with quickly, and we would far rather hear from you about something that turns out to be nothing.

If you cannot reach us and you are concerned, seek medical attention — an emergency department if symptoms are severe or your vision is affected.

Questions people ask

How long until I look normal?
Most visible swelling settles within a few days. What you were told at your appointment is more specific than any general answer.

Can I wear makeup?
Wait until the treated area has settled and you have been told it is fine.

Is bruising normal?
Yes, and it settles over several days.

When should I call rather than wait?
Any of the symptoms listed above, or anything that concerns you. Calling is always reasonable.
